             Understanding Gene Therapy

Gene therapy, also called gene transfer therapy, is the introduction of a normal gene into an individual’s genome in order to repair a mutation that causes a genetic disease.

Two types of gene therapy are

Example:

Cystic fibrosis affects those whose bodies cannot make a certain protein. This can be treated by

  1. giving the child's cell the gene to make this protein, or by

  2.  changing the parents testes and ovary cells to produce that protein

1.Somatic:

Focuses on modifying the child's cells. T
hough somatic gene therapy will treat the cystic fibrosis of the baby, it will not be passed down to future generations.
 2.Germline:

Germline therapy focuses on modifying the DNA of the parent’s sperm and ovum cells. With germline therapy, it is possible to change not only the baby, but the future generations of the baby as well.
